Modern acoustic space is literally oversaturated with various noises, useful and harmful sounds, vibrations of different quality, various music and, finally, natural sounds. The crisis that has occurred in the socio-political life of Russia has changed the state and public institutions responsible for the process of socialization and continuity of generations. This concerns the discrepancy between tastes, views, behavior of generations and, above all, the spiritual foundations of the development of society. Changes in such attitudes, breaking the old ideology led to a state of spiritual disharmony. And therefore, the development of an intellectual and creative personality is a multifaceted task, covering the diverse activities of all social institutions.

We will focus on one influence on the personality – the influence of music. She, penetrating into the secret corners of our soul, awakens in her the best, bright, noble. With the help of music, such feelings as sensitivity, love for the Motherland are brought up, and in order to understand and love music, one does not need to know languages, because the language of music is the language of the soul.

How does music influence the younger generation? And does it affect at all? These are the questions before us. The current generation is so passionate about music that they live only for it. It’s a kind of addiction, passion. Nothing but music interests certain sections of the youth. More than 80% of children from the age of 9 listen to music every day using headphones, phones, players.

American scientists conducted studies showing that the average teenager in their country spends listening to underground music twice as much as the time he spends at school. And the fact that music is the passion of a huge layer of young people is an indisputable fact. Therefore, the influence of music on teenagers is very great. There is music inside every person.

An analysis of the results of a sociological study showed that the involvement of young people in musical culture is carried out spontaneously, uncontrollably. The process of selection of fundamental musical values includes evaluative cognition, during which the values that are especially significant for the individual are compared and selected.

Even ancient philosophers described the positive therapeutic effect of music on a person, indicating that music can wake up the gods. Man was exalted by music. Plato argued that music is an ally in our quest to bring order and harmony to any disharmony of the mind. Pythagoras established music as an exact science. The followers of Pythagoras developed a method of musical psychotherapy, which included a daily program of songs and musical plays, saying that “this world is founded through music and can be controlled by it.” Music was used to get rid of rage and anger and was considered the main means for educating a harmonious personality. Aristotle believed that music should bring joy and satisfaction, argued that music is able to influence the aesthetic side of the soul, shaping the personality. These thoughts later formed the basis of the theory of affects. Nowadays, any music, one way or another, carries an affect – it gives rise to emotions, associations, and encourages action. It is important, of course, to observe boundaries in affect. That’s why we talk about positive or negative influence. Later, the problem of the connection between music and the Universe was dealt with by Newton, who saw in music the closest analogue of an ordered Cosmos; physiologists V.M. Bekhterev and S.P. Botkin pointed to the connection between music and the physiology of the human body and dealt with issues of sound, loudness, timbre, tempo; modern scientists such as Loboc, Rochelle Blavo pay attention to the unity of music and the moral norms of society; Czech psychologist J. Shvantsar drew a diagram of the coordinated influence of the main factors on personality development: heredity, environment and upbringing. We equate music with the latter.

Science has already known the “Mozart effect”, when young children listening to his music develop intellectually faster. Now the term “Vivaldi effect” has been introduced into scientific circulation, which was discovered by researchers from the University of the Italian city of Chieti, proving that regular listening to his famous symphonic work “The Seasons” improves memory properties in older people and relieves physical pain.

From the point of view of physics, sound propagates in the air in waves. This means that sound waves radiate from a sounding object in all directions, as a result of which we pick up sound.

Nerve impulses that occur with certain sounds have the same frequency as the sounds themselves. Omitting all the physiological explanations of human perception of music, let’s say the main thing: the brain recognizes the pitch of sounds not only on the basis of which nerve fibers bring impulses, but also on the frequency of the impulses themselves.

And this means that music affects people, making its own corrections to the constant vibration of the molecules of the human body.

It’s all physiology. We are interested in another influence of music – the formation of the child’s personality by it. And it is in adolescence and youth that musical taste is formed. Music is one of the factors influencing the cultural life of society. Music at all times, since its inception, has been used as a means of influencing the consciousness of people. With its help, various goals were achieved. Music is one of the foundations of the true formation of a cultured person. This is a piece of art that fills in the gaps, educates the personality, develops the child’s abilities and helps to quickly understand one’s “I”, thereby knowing oneself. This will allow the child to be more communicative in the future.

Music is a metaphor. Metaphorical language is close to children, understandable regardless of age, metaphors are “safe” for children, arouse their interest and, to a greater extent than ordinary speech, meet children’s needs and expectations. The hypothesis put forward by us is: “Music subjugates a teenager, because he is forced to get involved in certain areas of it, but she also develops the teenager as a person. In ancient times, the directions of the influence of music on a person were distinguished: 1) on his spiritual essence; 2) on intelligence; 3) on the physical body. “Music is capable of exerting a certain influence on souls; and, obviously, it should be included in the number of subjects for the education of young people. (Aristotle, ancient Greek philosopher).

Below are the results of the survey conducted in the gymnasium.

To question number 1 “Do you intersect with music in your life?” 93% of respondents answered positively, which indicates the importance and necessity of music in the life of any person. For 7% of respondents, music is not a significant factor in life, which is not even worth fixing on.

From the answers to the second question “Do you study at a music school?” it is clear that a significant percentage (30%) of the respondents associated a certain period of their lives with the words “hard work”, “perseverance”, “patience”, “purposefulness”, “choice”, “willpower”, which is inherent in a person as a person in his development . Respondents who “dropped out” of music studies by the 7th grade realize the wrongness of their decision and understand that “time is lost”, saying that playing music would help in their studies (“Time would be more dense, therefore, would be more successfully used » – Katya, 13 years old)

To question No. 3 “Do you sing (anywhere)?” responses were received in the ratio of 62% and 38% positive to negative. This suggests that the emotions of a person, especially a teenager, need to be expressed: “let off steam”, “tune in to positive”, “the ability to express themselves”, “join creativity”.

Answers to the question “Is music necessary in a person’s life?” confirm the importance of the need for music in human life by 91%, which is in agreement with the thoughts of our distant ancestors.

Respondents were asked to choose the styles and direction of contemporary music that are most in demand by teenagers. The overall results are shown in the table:

opera rock underground style jazz classical rap variety rock’n’roll
ten% 41% 22% 20% 27% 48% 32% 22%

Preferences of teenagers were given to such directions as “rock” and “rap” (41 and 48 percent respectively). This once again suggests that teenagers are tuned in to the choice of fast, loud, rhythmic music that “helps move”, without thinking about the impact on health and psyche. In oral conversations, almost 80% of the guys answered that they found it difficult to justify their choice: “I just like it, that’s all.”

Regarding question No. 5 “When you are in a bad mood, what kind of music do you listen to?” it can be concluded that when a teenager in a gymnasium is in a bad mood, we listen to fast music in order to get positive emotions or “out of habit” (62%). This confirms the opinion of the scientists of Antiquity that music can either be in harmony with a person, or disharmonize him.

The final question of our questionnaire “Why does a person need music?” finally confirmed our hypothesis about the diverse influence of music on a person (teenager), both on a personality and a physiological being. The table below shows common responses that we can relate to the areas of influence of music.

Music influence Respondents’ response
on human health to live long
on human emotions to have fun
can’t be put into words
to go through life positively
music = alternative to listen
to take your mind off bad thoughts
on the human soul for spiritual development
to sing in my heart
not to be fussy
on a person’s personality to be at the center of the company
to become a person
to be versatile
to express the inner self

The answer “I don’t know” to this question indicates that music is perceived by a teenager as something taken for granted, existing in unity with a person.

Another direction of the survey is the comparison of the features of the value content of different genres of music according to the elements of the a priori grid of A. Maslow’s value dimension. Respondents were offered the following task: “You have a list of values in front of you. In the column above which is written LIFE, check the boxes next to those values that, in your opinion, are inherent in life; in the column above which says MUSIC, check the boxes next to the values that are inherent in music, etc. Work quickly without thinking. There are no right or wrong answers, we are interested in your opinion.”

Based on the results of the second survey, a table was compiled:

Value Number – per person % value
A life Music Author’s song Classical music alternative music
Good
Vitality
A game “difficult” “difficult”
True “difficult” “difficult” “difficult”
the beauty
Ease
Need
Order
Simplicity
Meaning
Justice “difficult”
Uniqueness

From the foregoing, we can conclude: speaking about the influence of music on the personality of a teenager, one should pay attention, first of all, to its listener, who must be able to listen to music, and the fact how this listening takes place, how it is determined, whether it has any patterns, what does it have character? To answer these questions, it is necessary to address the listener directly. Of course, listening has an individual character, and there is no need to argue with the fact that each person perceives something in his own way, but it cannot be denied that there are some general criteria for preferring one or another genre for a certain audience. The basis of these criteria lies not in some acoustic features of musical works (although they also play some role), but in the personal sense that the listener puts into this or that music.

Music can be a bond between parents and teenagers. The most important thing is the ability to communicate with the child and build relationships with him. Much attention should be paid to the musical preferences of the child, because in their musical world (and it doesn’t matter if it’s rock or some other direction), teenagers are trying to find peace, to realize themselves. Adults need to understand the musical preferences of a teenager, because it has long been proven that the influence of music on a person is quite strong. This type of art, like many others, affects emotionality and sensuality, affects the subconscious of a person, stands at the origins of the development of a person’s personality.

Being a person means having an active life position; to exercise elections; evaluate the consequences of the decision made and hold accountable for them to yourself and the society in which you live; constantly control their own behavior, subordinate it to their power. Music is directly involved in all this.
